Chick Chat

Last night, I met two of my girlfriends for a drink at a local establishment and we got chatting as girls do. The topic of the word "chick" came up as I am currently writing a book with this title and it is used in my blog title as well, Where Chicks Make "Cents". One of my friends really does not like the word and wants me to change it.  My other friend does not have such a strong reaction to the word.  Eventually we moved on to other important topics such as Obama, hairdressers and work.  Like most chick chat it ran the gamete.

Driving home, I wondered "how many other women are offended by the word "chick"?  Should I be change my branding, my vibe, my book title?  Maybe gal, girl or lady would be better.  As an avid skier and one that has and embraces her attitude, I like chick.  In fact, being called a chick on sticks (a girl who skis), a chick that rocks, and  a chatty chick (yes, I am highly verbal!) have always been terms of endearment.  The word makes me feel young, sassy and hip. But maybe I am alone in this one.

So let me know.  What would you prefer to be called?  A chick? A gal? A woman?  A lady? If a man called you one of these names how would it feel?  What images come to mind with each word?  If you were older or younger would you feel differently?

Is office sabotage gender neutral?

Last month we asked our Downtown Women's Club members and female readers whether they had ever been sabotaged in the office by another woman.   We found that 87% of the women taking the poll had experienced this.  Now, a few sharp readers raised a terrific question - are we being sabotaged by the men at the same rate?  So, let's hear it.  Have any of the boys in the office gone and done you wrong?!

The problem with pink

Over the past few months, we've been looking at some of the issues of marketing businesses to women, because, after all, we are a business that markets to women.

First, we caught an interesting conversation over at TechCrunch about women's site names.  Then a random conversation I had with the always provocative Lena West focused on another (darker) facet of site names for women's business groups. She then turned that discussion into a blog post over at LipSticking about the "smuttification" by spam filters of anything referencing females in a domain name or email address. 

Finally, www.DowntownWomensClub.com was included in a discussion called "Pink until you Puke."  We found this post very timely because we are in the midst of doing a bit of a website revamp. So, while we can't resolve these all today we'd love to have you take our survey about Pink websites. Feel free to add comments below about anything else on this topic!

Project Runway - coming to an office near you?

I've been trading emails with Anita Bruzzese over at the fabulous (and downright funny on occasion) 45 Things blog about whether casual day might just be so 2006.  As Heidi Klum would say, "You're either in or you're out." And I actually vote for "out" when it comes to casual attire in the office. 

But, I'm not the only one, seems the New York Times recently wrote about the return of the necktie.  On the other hand, a separate survey found that the majority of people still felt casual was the way to go.  (I would nitpick and say great if you want to be one of the masses; however, if the goal is to distinguish yourself, ix-nay the tanktops and flip-flops).

So, what do you think?  Should casual day be "in" or "out"?
